Big Horn County, Wyoming
BASIN
Important town, county seat of Big Horn county. Located on the Big Horn
River, 65 miles west from Buffalo. Surrounded by a prosperous stock raising and
farming country. Coal and some oil are found in the neighborhood. Bridger,
Montana, is the nearest railway point at present, but upon completion of the
railroad to Cody, Basin will be only 50 miles from a railroad point. Basin has
good churches and excellent schools. The present board are Geo. N. Michlem,
chairman; G. W. Richardson, clerk; James I. Patten, treasurer. Basin is reached
by stage lines from Buffalo, Casper, by the way of Thermopolis and Bridger,
Montana. Population, 300; altitude, 3,400 feet.

THERMOPOLIS
(in Fremont County)
An incorporated city and thriving town in Fremont counthy, 60 miles northeast
from Lander. Located in a beautiful valley on the Big Horn river and surrounded
by the Big Horn and Owl Creek mountains. Stockgrowing and farming are the
principal industries. The Big Horn Hot Springs are about one mile from
Thermopolis. The square mile of land on which the springs are situated belongs
to the state, and is known as the Wyoming Hot Springs Reserve. On this reserve
are many hot springs, the principal one of which is an eighth of a mile east of
the Big Horn river and 100 feet above it. This spring measures about thirty-five
feet across and discharges daily 18, 500,000 gallons of water at 135 degrees
